Understanding United States Foreign Trade Data

This data explains the different foreign trade classifications and valuation systems and other factors that complicate the understanding of United States foreign trade data. It is available at a cost of $7.50 from the Superintendent of Documents.

Monthly FT 410 Data
A Shipper's Export Declaration (SED) must accompany every export valued over $1000.00. This declaration is the document that you or your freight forwarder present to customs as the shipment leaves. When Customs is finished with the document, it is sent to the Department of Commerce's Bureau of Census in Anderson, Indiana, where it is entered into a computer data base. Every month, the bureau publishes a book titled U.S. Exports, Schedule E, Commodity by Country or the "Monthly FT 410." In minutes, you can learn a great deal from simple analysis of this data.

HOW TO USE THE FT 410 SMOKE DETECTORS—A CASE STUDY

• 43,535 smoke detectors valued at $750,000 left the United States of America during the month of June, 1984.
• 310,502 smoke detectors valued at $6,022,000 left the United States of America January thru June, 1984. Sales will be $12,000,000.
• Divide $6,022,000 by 310,502 units shipped and learn that the average declared value of each unit was $19.39.
• Most importantly, the data is shown country by country so that the user learns where the potential markets are and how many units were shipped in each case.

Packing list The packing list is an extremely important document because, aside from your customer's requirements, it is often used by customs officials on both sides to check and verify a shipment, and should, therefore, contain complete details of the shipment. With the packing list, the merchandise can be physically located by individual carton or container. Factor Analysis - Factor Rotation Factor analysis is complicated somewhat (or made more interesting, depending on your perspective) by the fact that it is possible to generate several factor analysis solutions (loadings and factor scores) for any data set.
